"Trauma Sensitive Schools
“”Trauma can affect school performance, increase dropout rates, and lead to more suspensions and expulsions (National Child Traumatic Stress Network, 2008). Embracing a trauma-informed school culture requires an understanding of how trauma affects the individual and the behaviors related to negative coping skills. Trauma-informed practices promote resiliency.”” ~Utah State Board of Education
In this presentation attendees will gain understanding of what trauma is, how it affects our students and what we, as educators, can do to help recognize and respond effectively to the students that struggle with it.
Video clips from the documentary, “”Paper Tigers”” will be shown. This documentary details a school in Washington State that used trauma sensitive approaches to help their students feel connected and improve their odds of school success.
Simple, but effective, interventions will be taught to add to teacher’s behavioral management skill base. Resources will also be provided to further educator’s knowledge and continued progress."
